Why so much risk lives in twenty feet of yard
Blacklegged ticks are fragile in ways that work in your favor. They dry out quickly in sun and wind, so they cannot survive long in a mowed lawn under a July afternoon. They need the leaf litter layer, the shade, and the humidity that comes with it. That is why a New Hampshire yard tends to have a sharp boundary rather than an even spread. Sample the open lawn and you find almost nothing. Sample the first ten to twenty feet inside the tree line and you find the population. The rodents reinforce the pattern. Mice and chipmunks live in that same band, in stone walls, woodpiles, and brush, and larval and nymphal ticks feed on them before they ever meet a person. So the whole strategy follows: keep the used part of the yard open, sunny, and short, make the transition dry and visible with a chip border, and concentrate raking, cutting, and any treatment on the narrow band where the ticks actually are. That is a manageable project even on a wooded lot.
The other two infections that ride the same tick
Lyme dominates the conversation, but the blacklegged tick in New Hampshire carries more than one thing. Babesiosis, a red blood cell parasite, produced 340 reported cases in the state between 2011 and 2019, an average near 38 a year, and northern New England is where it has been climbing fastest. Anaplasmosis travels the same route. What makes them tricky is presentation. Lyme often announces itself with an expanding rash that people recognize. Babesiosis and anaplasmosis frequently show up as fever, chills, and heavy body aches with no skin sign at all, which reads like a summer virus. Co-infection from a single bite is possible, and because treatment differs between them, guessing costs time. The useful habit is simple. When you see a doctor after any tick exposure, lead with the tick, the date, and where you were. Older adults and anyone without a spleen should be especially prompt, since babesiosis hits harder in those groups.
What the two visits accomplish, and what they do not
The early May round targets nymphs before their season peaks. Since nymphs cause most human infections, this is the visit with the clearest health payoff, and its timing is narrow. Applied in late June it arrives after much of the damage. The October round targets adults. Those ticks are not the main infection source, but they are the ones that feed, mate, and lay eggs, so treating them lowers next spring's nymph population. Skipping it is the most common reason a program underperforms in its second year. Neither visit sterilizes the woods. Deer walk through, birds and mice carry ticks across a treated line, and the population rebuilds. Treatment lowers the density in the band you use rather than eliminating a species from your property. That is why the habitat work matters more than the product. A raked, cut, bordered edge changes what the ground can support. A treatment changes what is living there this month.
Prevention for a wooded subdivision lot
Start by mapping how the family actually uses the yard. The path to the shed, the route the kids take to the neighbors, the spot where the dog lies down, and the strip along the driveway get crossed dozens of times a week, and those crossings are where exposure happens. Widen and brighten those routes first. Cut back overhanging branches so sun reaches the ground, mow them wide, and chip the shoulders. A path that dries out after rain is a path with far fewer ticks on it. Then deal with the storage zone. Firewood stacked against the house, an old brush pile, and lumber on bare ground all shelter the mice that feed young ticks. Get wood on a rack and away from the wall, and haul the brush pile off. Finally, set a household rule that survives a busy week: shower within two hours of coming in, and clothes go straight into a hot dryer for ten minutes. Those two habits catch what the yard work misses, and they cost nothing but the reminder.
The exposure your yard program cannot touch
Even a well-managed property covers only part of the picture. Kids play at ball fields cut into woods. Trails start at every trailhead in the state. Neighbors do not rake their edges. ticks come home on a soccer bag. So build a second layer that travels. Treat hiking shoes and pant cuffs with a permethrin product, which stays effective through multiple washes. Tuck pants into socks for anything off-pavement. Stay center-trail rather than brushing the vegetation on either side. After any outing, run the same routine you use at home: shower promptly, dryer on high for ten minutes, and a hands-on check that includes the scalp, behind the ears, the waistband, and behind the knees. Those are the spots nymphs are actually found. And keep perspective on the numbers. Reported cases understate real exposure, since the CDC estimates roughly 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme each year against much smaller surveillance totals. The routine matters more than the statistic.
